Album Artwork
Light-hearted relief in a bit of passive agressivism on my part (angry at delayed posts, oh here's something funny, angry at missing posts, oh look a kitten) but this is about album artwork so worth sharing.
A couple are rude. There are breasts. And the authenticity of a couple is debatable. Though some definitely are genuine.
Bad album covers
I like 'All My Friends Are Dead' but mainly because it reminds me of my old Medulla Nocte t-shirt for the song 'All Our Friends Are Dead' which featured a picture of a dead body having its face being eaten by a crow and which is intentionally worn on inappropriate occasions. There's four of us who have decided whoever dies last gets cremated in it. Fun.
More bad album covers on The Guardian. Some duplication.

Links between album artwork and video
One of the things you MUST ensure happens is that you create a direct link between the digipak and the music video. This doesn't, as we will see, have to be obvious (there will be some direct intertextual references, of course, but depending on your genre you may be operating in a state of 'differance' or subtle sign:signification using your active audience's intelligence to make the links).

Useful examples of digipak ideas
What are the codes and conventions of a digipak?
- What are the features of a digipak?
- What information is included in a digipak? Where? Why?
- How is information is conveyed in a digipak?
- How is the artist presented? Why?
- Are there any intertextual links? Why?
- How is colour used effectively?
- How are written codes used effectively?
- How big are they?
- What materials are or could be used?
- What is the overall purpose of a digipak (other than to store a CD safely)?
Remember, I don't just share top band work with you. I will share a range of approaches and a range of levels of detail so you can identify what is succesful and why.

Digipaks
For next Tuesday's lesson (26th June) you must each bring in at least TWO CD digipaks of two different artists.
If you don't own any digipaks, please see me.

Blimey! Posting Rampage
When you come to design your digipaks and magazine advertising campaigns typography is going to be really important.
I clicked the 'next blog' button and, lo and behold, came across this. Some interesting ideas which might be worth having a look at.

Wednesday 18th Cover
There is a lesson, as you wer told. There will be a cover supervisor. A register will be taken. All the resources you need are in the room and the person taking the class knows what you're doing. Below is a summary of the tasks (there are a couple of handouts to help you too, so you need to be in class to get them).
Rumours of the school being shut / there not being a lesson are pure hyperbole.
Oh and the website http://digipakicreate.com/?lang=en&id=1 might very well save you some work when you come to make it. Not that I'm advocating an easy route but if you feel you want to use the service to assist you may. They don't design it for you, you just get some tools and some digipaks. It does cost though.

TASKS:
1) Sketch a rough layout of all the parts and sides of your digipak. Don’t forget any inserts you might want to include.
2) Mind map all the information you’d expect to find anywhere in an album.
3) Design your front cover. Think about image, font, colour…absolutely anything you can to create meaning and create an impression of the artist. REMEMBER YOU ARE CREATING YOUR OWN ARTIST, SONG TITLES AND ALBUM TITLE.
4) Design your back cover.
5) Design the inside front cover.
6) Design any other things you would include (photo pull out of artist / free poster / lyrics booklet / advert for free digital download etc.
HOMEWORK: To produce a detailed plan of every stage of the design of your digipak(s) for Wednesday 1st Feb.
